As a homeowner, it's likely that one day, you will need the help of an emergency plumber. Although this can be a stressful experience, it's important to realise what qualifies as a plumbing emergency (burst pipes, overflowing toilets etc.), and the steps you can take to try and keep the situation from inevitably causing more damage.
To help guide you through this, at Origin Plumbing and Gas, our experts have crafted this blog post with some easy to follow steps.
Call an Emergency Plumber
In an emergency situation, your first port of call should always be to make contact with our plumbing service Origin Plumbing and Gas. This lets a member of our team know that there is an emergency so we can send someone your way as soon as possible.
The staff member who handles your call may give you a set of instructions to complete in the meantime to help control the situation. Always try and follow these instructions as best you can. In addition to this, it may be an idea to try and undertake the following steps if and where possible.
1. Turn Off Electrical Sources
In a plumbing emergency, it is always a plus if you can safely reach and switch off any electrical sources. This will protect yourself and your family if there is any flooding (covered in the next step) because live electricity that comes into the water can be dangerous.
In addition to this, electrical fires can also occur if electrical coverings are damaged and wires come into contact with one another.
2. Try to Stop the Water Supply
One of the more pressing issues that will require immediate attention from a plumber is flooding. Water that comes into contact with wires, plugs and other electrical sources can have dangerous consequences. If left too long, water can also cause serious structural issues and expensive furniture damage. Therefore, if it's safe to do so, disconnect all water sources.
3. Check the Pipes
This goes hand in hand with the aforementioned step. Despite having turned off the water supply, it’s a good idea to still check the pipes. This is because excess water can lurk here and cause preventable damage if the pipes burst due to a build-up of water.
4. Damage Limitation
If possible, it will be advantageous to try and limit the damage your emergency plumbing situation has on your home. This can include – of course, only if it's safe to do so – moving expensive pieces of furniture and items upstairs or away from the water. In cases of flooding, this will prevent furniture from becoming waterlogged and having to be replaced.
This can also help speed up the repair process when your plumber arrives on the scene, as it creates more open space for them to work.
