When you can’t connect your home to the sewer network, or if you’re just looking to ‘go off the grid’, on-site septic systems will help you deal with your sewage. 

The main component will be your septic tank, which is fed by a series of pipes. This is where the discarded contents of your showers, baths and toilets end up. The tank will need to be filled with water and bacterial additives to help breakdown anything that enters it. 

As the process begins to work, the sewage gets broken down into sludge – which ends up at the bottom of the tank – and wastewater that’s removed via an effluent disposal system. Every now and again, you’ll need to have the sludge pumped out.
